Thunderstorms
| Life Lessons |

We just got through a terrible set of thunderstorms and at its peak, the sights and sounds of thunder, lightening, and pouring rain were all around us as we tried to eat an early Sunday dinner. I was reminded at the awesome power of God. I could feel this immense force all around me, around my house. I felt the presence of God as he whispered, "Do not be afraid. The earth was meant to be drenched by the rain. The thunder and the lightning are good. I will not harm you." God whispers to us even as he commands the loudest and most powerful forces on the planet to come crashing all around us.
Scripture says:
The clouds poured down water, the skies resounded with thunder;
your arrows flashed back and forth.
Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world;
the earth trembled and quaked.
Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters,
though your footprints were not seen. Psalm 77:17-19
At our best, we pale in comparison with the power of God. Sure, we try to imitate the power he harnesses. We create bombs instead of lightening. Bombs destruct; there are no beneficial properties to setting off a bomb. On the other hand lightning has beneficial properties. Lightning helps the Earth maintain electrical balance. The Earth is recharged by thunderstorms. What an amazing, mind boggling notion. The earth is actually enhanced and recharged by the power of a lightning strike.
After a thunderstorm passes by, the sky brightens, the air is lighter, the birds and animals come back out from their hiding places. In a way, life starts over on the other side of the storm. I think our lives are like that a lot. We go through storms in our lives. Heartaches, decisions, persecutions rise up like thunderclouds in our life. Sooner or later, we have to go to God with our issues, and like the thunderstorms, the lightning that God strikes in our hearts recharges us, solidifies our positions, our convictions so we can push forward with His cause. The lightning cleanses us, just as it cleanses the earth and we come out cleaner, brighter, lighter to start over on the other side of the storm.
You speak with thunder and lightning
Your voice shakes the mountains
The foundations of the earth
All I can offer is this fragile breath
With each one I'll praise You
With each one I'll praise You more ~
