Just last weekend, our pastor said something to us that made me think then, and hit me like a brick today. He said, (paraphrasing) "As Christians, we are where we are for a specific reason. Even if you hate your job, God has put you in that perfect spot for a specific reason. You will know it when it comes."
I thought to myself, 'sure, for other people, not me. I've been here for 8 years.' My husband is a great example. One day, after being a land surveyor for 15 years he decided he needed to work in the prison system. WHAT?? OK, fine. Come to find out, he needed to be there to witness to a mass murder who plead guilty and was about to face a life sentence. That man is now leading bible studies in his prison. Once this was done, my husband was able to quit that awful job, go back to surveying (which he still hates) and enter the prison ministry. This was his calling, but he had to go there to get here.
On to me, I've been at the same job, with basically the same people for 8 years. I love them all dearly. Then, one of them got sick. Real sick. My friend has ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and it affected his throat first. He left for a two-week vacation alone. He's riding his motorcycle from Florida to the Pacific Ocean and back. It broke my heart when he left on Friday afternoon.
Then my husband said something to me I won't soon forget. "Have you shared your faith with him?" "Me? No. Of course not, I'm at work." Rob said, "You know you have to." Since that moment on Friday, I've been plagued with this need to speak to him about God and find out where he is with his faith. It crescendoed today when I got to the office.
So, from my personal email, I sent a long, rambling email to his blackberry saying all the things I need to say to someone who has nothing but the next 10 days to reflect on his life. I left it in his hands, praying that he'll want more information. I offered to email him throughout his journey, I am waiting to hear back. I hope he says yes.
Maybe the last 8 years came down to that moment. Maybe God is big enough and awesome enough that he knew I would come to him and that through me, I could help my friend. That is just amazing.

I hope I can update this post soon with some good news.
