Life Changing Moments
Monday, 08 February 2010 00:00

“Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water.” (John 21:7 NIV)

Friends get cancer. Babies are born with severe handicaps. Parents have strokes. Earthquakes shatter already frail countries.  Tsunamis decimate island villages.  These are just a few examples of life-changing moments.  How we respond and react to these moments is what defines us and it’s what consumes us. What do you do when a life-changing moment happens? Do we muster up enough courage to face it head on and use it to glorify God or do we let it eat at us, consuming our thoughts and energy until we’re just a heap of bitterness? Do we take the bad with the good and praise God, showing the world that we have our eyes set on eternity, not on this world, or do we turn our backs when we think the fight can’t be won?

Peter had gone back to fishing; he thought the fight was over.  But the instant Peter realized it, he jumped out of the boat and literally swam to the shore, not wanting to waste one moment of his time or energy on anything but getting to the feet of Jesus.  He knew this was a life-changing moment and he was not about to let it pass.

Jesus, I need you.  This life-changing moment of mine is hard and it hurts. I don’t know how to get through it, I don’t know if I can stand the pain and the heartache.  So instead, I will focus on you and rest in the fact that you have me.
